Stories from the Field

Pact began working in Sudan in 2002, leading a coalition of local and international partners in the implementation of the Sudan Peace Fund. Since then, Pact's Sudan Country Program has designed and implemented numerous programs in the areas of community security, civil security strengthening, CPA dissemination, peacebuilding, local government recovery and development and infrastructure rehabilitation across Southern Sudan. Pact works through local partners to support Sudanese aspirations for peace, stability and development through the successful implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Pact's initiatives aim to expand and consolidate peace and reconciliation in Sudan, laying the foundation for the development of a peaceful and stable democracy and an active civil society. Pact's approach has been developed in response to Sudan's political, economic, and cultural situation. In partnership with numerous local organizations, Pact works to enhance Sudanese capacity to address the recovery process. Partnerships have been forged with civil society organizations such as peace committees, youth and women's groups, traditional leaders, Sudanese NGOs and local and central government authorities.

Pact Sudan is a development NGO that is taking a long-term approach in Southern Sudan; our local partners and national staff are the driving force behind the development and implementation of our projects. We rely on their expertise and dedication to improve our programming by working with communities to identify needs and potential solutions. The initiative and contribution of our staff and partners lays the groundwork for projects, seeking innovative, community-driven approaches to resolving some of the root causes of conflict in Southern Sudan.

Pact International

Pact International began in 1971 as a membership organization for private and voluntary organizations and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In 1992 Pact revised its bylaws, dissolved its membership, and established itself as an independent international nonprofit corporation. It is registered in Washington, D.C. as a 501(c)(3) organization and currently operates 24 field offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Pact is a leading facilitator of leadership and organizational development for both nascent and established NGOs, networks and intermediary organizations as well as local and national governments and businesses. Through training, technical assistance, mentoring and direct financial support, Pact strengthens organizational and institutional capacity to further development goals. At the same time, Pact encourages the establishment of permanent ties to grassroots communities and cooperative but equal relationships among donors, government and business. At the heart of Pact's organizational development approach is the concept of teamwork, a natural extension of two guiding principles that characterize all Pact programs-participation and partnership.
