Peacebuilding

Peacebuilding is one of our core programs committed to conflict transformation through identifying and addressing root causes of conflict and finding sustainable strategies to mitigate these conflicts. Even after the signing of the CPA in 2005, communities have continued to conflict over resources, political differences and border disputes.

In partnership with implementing partners, this program has registered a lot of achievements. Among them is the summarization of the CPA and its translation into Arabic, which has been of great help in the sensitization of Sudanese about the CPA and how they can contribute to strengthening it. Activities in this program include youth exchange programs, peace dialogues, conferences, workshops, assessments, livelihood projects, among others. Pact Sudan believes in local ownership and participation in peace efforts, at the local, state and national level. This is based on the people-to-people approach that supported the peace process in Sudan leading up to the CPA. People-to-people peace building promotes community-identified and -driven peace work.

This methodology strengthens communities in their ability to analyze complex conflict situations, identify mutually beneficial priorities towards their resolutions and work towards the establishment of legitimate and capable institutions to monitor peace progress and success. At the same time, with the emergence of more and increasingly effective government structures on the local, state and national level, the buy-in of government actors has to be ensured. We work to involve them at an early stage in consultations and acknowledge their role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.

The overall goal of Pact Sudan’s Peace Program is “Enhanced peace and stability as a basis for recovery and sustainable development in Sudan”.

Six objectives contributing to that goal have been identified.

Capacity Building To build the capacity of communities, civil society, traditional and government structures to analyze and address underlying causes of conflict and address flash points as they arise.
Peacebuilding To enable communities and the government to build peaceful and stable relationships based on harmony and tolerance between communities.
Conflict Assessment and Early Warning To enhance awareness and alertness to possible triggers to conflict during the CPA implementation period and provide options for addressing these triggers.
Community Security To support the implementation of measures addressing the improvement of community security.
Good Governance To increase the awareness around human rights, rule of law, elections, referendum and other key governance issues related to the CPA implementation.
Conflict Sensitive
Development
